The high level of\nmaternal mortality is a health challenge worldwide and a common topic in global\nhealth discussions. Despite the significant progress made by some countries,\nlittle progress has been made in Africa as more than half of maternal deaths\nglobally still occur in sub-Saharan Africa.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Various factors\ncontribute to the maternal health crisis in Africa and globally. While there is\nno singular straightforward intervention that will eliminate maternal\nmortality, there is a strong consensus that strengthening healthcare systems,\navailability of skilled delivery attendants, and availability of quality medicines\nare crucial to improving pregnancy outcomes.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

A woman\u2019s lifetime\nrisk of maternal death is the probability that a 18-year-old woman will\neventually die from a maternal cause. Statistics on maternal mortality: According\nto the World Health Organisation (WHO), about 99 percent of the maternal deaths\nglobally occur in developing countries. In 2017, there were about 295,000\nmaternal deaths worldwide.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

85 percent of\nthese deaths occurred in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, with sub-Saharan\nAfrica accounting for roughly two-thirds of the maternal deaths. The maternal\nmortality ratio in sub-Saharan Africa was 542 deaths per 100,000 live births\ncompared to a global ratio of 216 deaths per 100,000 live births.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The major\ncomplications which account for about 75 percent of maternal deaths include\npostpartum haemorrhage; which is the most common cause of maternal deaths and\nis responsible for over one-quarter of deaths and other common causes such as\nhypertensive pregnancy disorders (e.g. pre-eclampsia and eclampsia),\ncomplications resulting from unsafe abortion, pre-existing medical conditions\nwhich are worsened by pregnancy (e.g. cardiac diseases and diabetes), sepsis,\nembolism, and malaria.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Causes of maternal mortality in Africa:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/h2>

A major cause of\nmaternal mortality in Africa is poor access to skilled healthcare workers.\nStatistics show that there are about 985 people for every nurse-midwife and\n3,324 people for every medical doctor in Africa.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Also, in a study\ncarried out in 12 states in Nigeria, it was discovered that a high level of\nrespondents both in private and public health facilities lacked certain\nknowledge critical to safe storage of oxytocin, which is a lifesaving commodity\nused to treat postpartum haemorrhage. Only 46 percent of respondents (52.8% in\nprivate, 40.0% in the public sector) had proper knowledge that oxytocin should\nbe stored in the refrigerator.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Most pregnant\nwomen have limited access to antenatal care, delivery and newborn care from\nhealth professionals. This is particularly true of women living in poverty, who\ntypically have no access to receive adequate health care and are more likely to\nexperience maternal death. A significant contributor to this challenge are the\ngrossly unequipped primary health centres (PHCs), which often lack even the\nmost basic requirements for quality healthcare, including good sanitary\nconditions and availability of safe drinking water, posing tremendous risk to\npregnant women in rural communities.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Unfortunately,\nthis is the state of many primary health centres in rural communities across\nAfrica. The result of such poor access to quality maternal healthcare has been\nan increased risk of death from severe bleeding, infections, or other\ncomplications.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

Strategies for improving pregnancy health outcomes in Africa:<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/h2>

\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

There is an\nurgent need for maternal mortality interventions in sub-Saharan Africa to\nreduce the maternal mortality rate from the current high levels to meet the\nSustainable Development Goals (SDG).\u00a0The SDG target is that by 2030,\nthe global maternal mortality ratio will be less than 70 per 100,000 live\nbirths.<\/o:p><\/b><\/span><\/h3>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The WHO has been\nworking with UN member states to improve maternal health by increasing\nresearch, establishing global standards, and providing technical support and\nclinical guidance. African governments should also match this with their\ncommitment.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In view of these,\nstrategies that must be adopted urgently to minimize maternal deaths and\nimprove health outcomes include:
\nStrengthening of Primary Health Centres (PHCs) in Africa: This is a non-negotiable\npathway to improving pregnancy health outcomes in rural communities.\nWell-equipped PHCs where rural women can access adequate antenatal, delivery,\nand postnatal care with access to safe drinking water are essential pillars for\nmaternal health.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Collaboration and\nstrategic partnerships between the government, private sector, and\nnon-governmental organizations (NGOs) both internationally, regionally and\nnationally are also crucial for the establishment of new and innovative\nfinancing mechanisms.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

Education and\nawareness campaigns to improve public awareness, particularly in rural\ncommunities, on the importance of adequate antenatal care as a critical\ndeterminant of pregnancy outcomes.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Antenatal care is\nnecessary to ensure the management and control of risk factors that might\nadversely affect pregnant women or the pregnancy outcome.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/p>

Maternal deaths\nhave a tremendous impact not only on the immediate families but also on the\nsocial and economic development of the wider communities. We are therefore calling\non all key players to rise to the challenge of strengthening health systems\nacross Africa to provide equitable and quality maternal healthcare.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/body>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
