Regular dental visits can not only\nprevent more serious health problems, but also save you money in the long\nrun.\u00a0<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

According to Dr. Biren Narhariprasad<\/b> Yajnik of Sterling Dental Clinic, vice\npresident of the Uganda Dental Association, taking advantage of a dental plan\nthrough your employer or even paying out of pocket for a cleaning can save Ugandans\nthousands or even millions of shillings by preventing a mouth disease from\nspreading into a systemic problem.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

\u201cPeople can stay healthier by\ngetting regular dental cleanings. People avoid going to the
\ndentist for a variety of reasons. The most significant impediment is the\ninitial cost. Some people are also afraid of the dentist. Patients who are\nconcerned that their mouths are too far gone, which is uncommon, can now be\ntreated for conditions that we couldn\u2019t treat a generation ago.,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

For those who do not have dental\ninsurance or simply cannot afford to pay for a cleaning, Dr. Biren recommends\nbrushing and flossing, drinking fluoridated water or using fluoride
\ntoothpaste, and avoiding sticky, sugary foods, tobacco, and alcohol.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Dr. Biren expressed hope that more\nemployers will recognize the value of providing workers with dental insurance\nbecause his preventative dental care study demonstrates actual quantitative\nsavings. He believes that insurance companies would pay far less
\nfor preventative oral health than they would if a mouth illness resulted in a\nbacterial infection that spreads.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

He summarized the study results by\nsaying, \u201cOur takeaway is that if you get your teeth cleaned, you can avoid the\nhospital and live a healthier life.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>The findings also show that people\nwith pre-existing conditions such as coronary artery disease or diabetes can\nsave more money.<\/span><\/p>
