For many vulnerable children in Uganda, home is not always a place of safety. Some have experienced neglect, abuse, abandonment, family breakdown, or life on the streets. Others have lost access to education, healthcare, and the basic care every child needs to thrive.
When a child has nowhere safe to turn, the consequences can be devastating. Without timely intervention, children face increased risks of exploitation, violence, substance abuse, trafficking, chronic homelessness, and lifelong poverty.
At Tez ChildFund Africa, we believe that every child deserves more than survival—they deserve protection, love, healing, and the opportunity to build a brighter future.
That is why we are launching the Restore Our Shelter Campaign.
In 2018, Tez ChildFund Africa took an important step toward protecting vulnerable children by opening a temporary residential shelter in Kiwatule, Kampala. Although our resources were limited, the shelter became a place of hope for 21 rescued children who had nowhere else to turn.
Within its walls, children found:
For three months, children who had experienced instability began to regain confidence, routine, and hope. Unfortunately, due to limited funding, we were forced to close the shelter. The closure did not end our mission—it strengthened our resolve.
It proved that even modest resources can transform lives when children are surrounded by care, protection, and opportunity. Today, we are ready to build again—this time with a stronger foundation, improved governance, and a long-term vision for sustainability.
Whenever possible, children should grow up within safe, loving families. Our first priority is always to strengthen families and support children within their communities. However, there are times when remaining at home is not immediately safe or possible.
Some children require temporary residential care while social workers assess their situation, provide immediate protection, and work toward safe family reunification or other appropriate long-term solutions. A well-managed temporary shelter provides children with stability during one of the most difficult periods of their lives.
It offers:
Our shelter is not intended to replace families—it is a temporary place of safety while permanent solutions are developed in the child’s best interests.
The restored Tez ChildFund Africa Residential Shelter will serve as a child-friendly, temporary care center designed to provide holistic support for children in crisis.
The shelter will accommodate up to 25 children at a time, offering a safe and structured environment where they can recover, learn, and prepare for a brighter future.
Children will receive:
A secure, welcoming home where children can sleep safely, receive care, and experience stability while longer-term solutions are developed.
Every child will receive three balanced meals each day, ensuring they have the nutrition needed to grow, heal, and succeed.
Each child will undergo health assessments and receive access to healthcare services, vaccinations, treatment, and referrals when needed.
Children who have experienced trauma often need compassionate support. Professional counseling, psychosocial care, and mentorship will help children rebuild confidence, resilience, and hope.
Children will participate in bridge learning, receive educational materials, and be prepared for reintegration into formal schooling.
Healing also happens through play. Sports, music, art, reading, and creative activities will help children rediscover joy, confidence, and friendship.
Whenever it is safe and appropriate, our team will work closely with families, local authorities, and community leaders to reunite children with their families. Family strengthening remains central to our approach.
Our goal is to raise the resources needed to establish and sustainably operate a child-centered residential shelter serving vulnerable children in crisis.
Every contribution brings us one step closer to opening our doors again.
